“When is the best time to come?” is the question we get most on WhatsApp. The short answer surprises people: any time works. Cloud-forest birds live here all year round.
The longer answer is more useful, because the season does change the experience: how much rain you’ll get, which migrants you’ll find, how busy it will be and how easy it is to get a cabin.
This guide covers what you need to decide when to come birding in Manizales, in Colombia’s Central Andes, and what to pack so you don’t freeze or miss a shot for lack of one small item.
| Quick answer When is the best time for birding in Manizales, Colombia? Birding is good year-round. The drier months (roughly December–February and June–August) make hiking and photography easier, while October to March brings many of the 77 migratory species recorded in Caldas. Pack layers, a rain jacket and binoculars. |
What the mountain weather is like around ManizalesCómo es el clima en la montaña de Manizales

Manizales sits on the Central Andes at over 2,000 metres, and the countryside along the road to Magdalena is high-Andean cloud forest. Expect cold mornings, mild afternoons and mist that rolls in and out several times a day.
Colombia’s Andean region generally has a bimodal rainfall pattern: two wetter seasons (roughly April–May and October–November) and two drier ones (December–February and June–August). In the mountains the boundaries blur. It can rain in the “dry” season and dawn can be crystal clear in the middle of the wet one.
Our advice: don’t plan your trip to avoid rain entirely. Plan it to be ready for it.
Birding seasons in Manizales at a glance

| Period (approx.) | Weather | Worth knowing |
| December – February | Drier | Good light for photography; Colombian holiday season, book early. Boreal migrants present. |
| March – May | Rain increasing | Lush, very active forest; muddier trails. Some migrants still around early on. |
| June – August | Drier | Comfortable hiking; mid-year Colombian holidays. |
| September – November | Rain increasing | Migrants arrive from the north. Manizales Bird Fair: November 12–15, 2026. |
General Andean climate pattern; exact conditions vary from year to year.
If photography is your priority
Aim for the drier months and plan several dawn sessions. With more than one chance, a cloudy morning stops being a problem. At Hacienda El Bosque’s hides, early light is the most valuable light.
If you’re after migratory species
Caldas has 77 recorded migratory species, according to figures published by La FM and Semana in October 2026. Many arrive during the northern winter, so the October–March window suits you best. You might even spot familiar North American warblers in a completely new setting.
If you’d like to combine it with an event
The Manizales Bird Fair, November 12–15, is a great reason to visit. Just note it’s the highest-demand window, and Hacienda El Bosque has only five cabins.
What to pack for birdwatching in Colombia: a practical checklist

This is the list we’d give a friend. It’s not exhaustive; it covers the things people most often forget.
Clothing
- Layers: a thermal or quick-dry base layer, a fleece and a waterproof jacket.
- Comfortable trousers that aren’t jeans (wet denim never dries).
- Waterproof boots or trail shoes with good grip; trails can be muddy.
- A light hat and gloves for early mornings.
- Neutral colours (greens, browns, greys). Bright colours scare birds.
Birding and photography gear
- Binoculars (8×42 is a solid choice for forest birding).
- A camera with a telephoto lens if you’re shooting; birds come close at the hides, but a long lens makes the difference.
- A rain cover for your camera and dry bags.
- Spare batteries and memory cards: batteries drain faster in the cold.
- A Colombia bird app or field guide.
Also worth packing
- Insect repellent and sunscreen (yes, in the mountains too).
- A reusable water bottle or flask.
- A head torch for pre-dawn starts.
What you don’t need to bring: an extra blanket. The cabins have fireplaces and hot water bottles.
How to get to Hacienda El Bosque
The hacienda is at Km 18 on the road to Magdalena, in rural Manizales (Caldas). The last stretch includes an unpaved road, so a higher-clearance vehicle helps, especially in the rainy season.
International visitors usually fly into Bogotá and connect to Manizales or Pereira, then continue by road. Message us before you travel and we’ll help with the route and the best arrival time for your plans.
Common mistakes when planning a birding trip
- Staying just one night. One dawn isn’t much. Two or three mornings greatly improve your chances with shy species like the Equatorial Antpitta.
- Skipping a local guide. Guides such as Eddison or Néstor Zapata know the calls and the timing at each feeder. That’s the difference between “I think I heard something” and the photo.
- Underestimating the cold. The city may feel mild, but dawn in the forest is another climate.
- Booking last minute. With five cabins, key dates go quickly.
Frequently asked questions about when to go and what to pack
Can you go birding in Manizales all year?
Yes. Resident cloud-forest species can be seen year-round. What changes with the seasons is the rainfall and the presence of migratory birds.
When do migratory birds arrive in Caldas, Colombia?
Many of the 77 migratory species recorded in Caldas arrive during the northern winter, roughly from October to March.
Is it cold at Hacienda El Bosque?
Mornings and evenings are cold, as is typical of high-Andean forest. That’s why the cabins have fireplaces and hot water bottles. Pack layers.
What binoculars work best for cloud-forest birding?
An 8×42 pair is a balanced choice, with a wide field of view and enough brightness for the forest interior.
How many nights do you recommend for a birding trip?
At least two nights, so you get several dawns at the feeders and on the trails, when bird activity peaks.
